Typography Presentation

First we had a presentation in the lecture theatre of the basics of typography. This was a great introduction into the topic that previously I knew nothing about. The main points I took out of the talk were:

Sans serif and low contrast fonts are more contemporary as they reflect how type was chiselled into materials rather than how they were written with calligary pens
There are 3 classifications of Sans serif fonts: transitional, humanist and geometric (Futura is geometric)
There are 3 classifications of serif fonts: Old style, Modern and transitional
The xheight is the height of the lowercase letters
Some parts of letters, ie the curves will sit above the xheight so that optically the letter looks like it sits at the xheight
Scale/heirarchy is important to consider as it affects how your read the type.. you can use it to place emphasis on certain words etc.
Anything from 45 to 75 characters is regarded as a satisfactory length of line
Add a lead to give your lines more room to breath (adding space between lines)
Justified text has flexible spacing, so the distance between words changes so that the words don't leave a ragged edge.
Letters might need to be kerned to look more visually consistent. The distance between an o and an x for example will optically look bigger than other letters even though it's actually equal.
Typefaces already have connotations in the eye of the public from their use in pop culture.
