Initial thoughts

The first thing I did to start my designing process was designing what I actually wanted my flag to be about. I realised quite quick that trying to incorporate my entire identity was going to be impossible as I barely even know what makes me 'me'. At first I thought about the different aspects of my identity that have either not changed that much as I've grown up or those that I find are currently extremely important in my life. I narrowed it down to:

My queer identity
My procrastination
My current music taste and favourite films
Being a deep thinker

I decided that my queer identity, while extremely important to me isn't particularly unique to just me, and is probably best described using the pride flag I researched earlier. I first created some designs about being an extreme procrastinator, which is one of the things people mentioned when I asked them to describe me! I thought there were lots of good opportunities for quite funny symbols, such as twiddling thumbs, a sand timer, the social media symbols and slow things like snails. However, I realised after I created some designs that this was while quite a funny design, was extremely pessimistic to me as a person. Since I've joined art foundation, doing work I'm interested in, I've started being much better at actually managing it. I decided that even as a funny self-deprecating joke, I didn't want to create that as a flag of my personality, so I reevaluted.

One thing I noticed in my research was that my identity has changed SO MUCH in the past couple years. We all change so rapidly, it seemed practically impossible to choose an aspect of myself that would still be relevant in a year or even a week. I went along with this idea and decided to make a flag about growth. I still had to make it relevant to me though so I wanted to find a way to show my personal growth throughout the years. In the Asafo flags I researched I loved the use of animals in their designs, so that led me to designing a flag which includes the 3 main favourite animals I've had over the years, hopefully visually showing how we all change over the years. I also added lilacs to the design which are symbolic of change and growth. Overall I am really happy with the design.
